At 68 years old: How Speediance helped me to sustainably increase my strength

John Chuprinko, a former US Navy officer, defies age-related fitness decline with the Speediance Gym Monster and continuously increases his strength and athletic performance.

My name is John Chuprinko and I am the proud owner and user of the Speediance Gym Monster. At 68 years old, my life's journey has taken me from US Navy officer and auditor to PSIA-certified ski instructor and finally to commercially licensed pilot.

Fitness was a central part of my life even in my youth. As a child, I was very petite and didn't reach 1.50 meters and 45 kilograms until my second year of high school. I compensated for my small stature by trying to become as fit and strong as possible for my height. This mindset stayed with me throughout college and my naval career.

In the Navy, I had free access to exercise equipment and an optimal fitness environment. Running and cycling formed the foundation of my training, supplemented by weight training and cable machines. Shortly before leaving the Navy, however, I underwent two consecutive knee surgeries, after which my orthopedic surgeon advised me to stop running.

After retiring, I settled in a rural area with no gyms nearby. Therefore, I focused on cycling, skiing, baseball (not softball), and golf to maintain my fitness.

Until my mid-50s, I managed to maintain a good level of fitness. But this changed dramatically during a cycling race. While in second place near the finish line, I crashed heavily. The accident resulted in broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a week in the hospital. Even during my recovery, I suffered another setback: a car accident while cycling broke more bones and cost me further training time. This period made me painfully aware of how quickly fitness declines with age.

Regaining the necessary stamina for cycling races against significantly younger competitors proved to be an insurmountable hurdle. I did, however, achieve enough fitness to remain competitive in baseball, ski racing, and golf. But with the discontinuation of running and cycling training, I noticed a gradual decline in my overall fitness.

Last year brought a noticeable decline in performance: In 2022 I was still the Mid-West US Ski-Snowboard Champion in my age group – by 2023 I already lacked the strength to maintain my race position. My performance in baseball also dropped so drastically that I could no longer keep up with younger players.

Looking for the ideal training solution

Dissatisfied with my athletic performance, I began researching aging processes and their effects. Studies showed that strength training is an effective method for reducing, halting, or even reversing age-related decline in muscle performance. Initially, I invested in adjustable dumbbells, but these didn't offer the comprehensive training options I was looking for. This led me to search for a training machine. After carefully considering both smart and traditional equipment, I chose the Speediance Gym Monster because of its versatility.

Why the decision fell on the Gym Monster

Several key factors influenced this decision: The device offers programmed workouts with scientifically calibrated repetitions and intervals for all muscle groups. It works without an internet connection – crucial for my rural lifestyle. The compact design fits within my limited space, ruling out large, conventional machines. Successes that are already evident

After several months of use, I am thoroughly impressed: My muscular endurance has noticeably increased. The rowing equipment proved particularly valuable for indoor training when cycling outdoors is impossible. Although the baseball season ended and I haven't yet been able to test my skills in a game, my hitting power seems to have noticeably returned during training with the pitching machine.

I am particularly pleased with the strengthened leg and core muscles. I am now eagerly looking forward to the ski race camp at the end of November, where I will experience the full effects of the training.

The best thing about my new fitness journey is the improved feeling in my body and my more refreshed appearance.
