Core body temperature in men and women

Regarding core body temperature in men and women, there is no simple fixed
difference that can be applied to every person. Although it is often assumed
that women generally feel colder faster or have a lower body temperature
than men – differences in muscle mass, body fat percentage, and body size
can indeed play a role in thermoregulation. A study by the
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) shows
however, that the reality is more complex: the female body, it appears,
only begins to actively generate heat at lower ambient temperatures
than previously assumed. General statements about "male" and "female" body temperatures cannot simply be generalized.[4]

One area in which a clear and well-researched relationship is seen in women is the menstrual cycle. Hormonal changes can influence temperature regulation: after ovulation, core body temperature in the second half of the cycle increases by an average of about 0.2 to 0.5 °C compared to the first half of the cycle. This difference is particularly pronounced during sleep or immediately after waking up. Progesterone plays an important role in this.[5]

Why can your core body temperature rise or fall?

An increase in core body temperature can be a perfectly normal reaction to exertion. During exercise, large muscle groups work and produce heat. The longer or more intense the exertion, the more heat your body has to dissipate. In warm weather, this becomes more difficult. High humidity can also make it harder for sweat to evaporate. This changes the body's heat balance. A lower core body temperature can also have various causes. Sleep, rest, a cold environment, and the natural daily rhythm play a role. Diet and fluid intake can also be relevant in connection with physical exertion.

How to measure core body temperature?

If you want to measure core body temperature, the measurement method matters. A thermometer in the mouth, ear, or on the forehead does not directly measure the internal body temperature. For the most accurate measurement possible, methods that measure closer to the body's core are therefore used. These include measurements in the rectum or esophagus.
