For almost a year, the original Speediance Gym Monster was the cornerstone of my home gym. The recent release of not one, but two new models – the Gym Monster 2 and the top-of-the-line Gym Monster 2S – prompted me to conduct a thorough comparison. Having tested all three models side-by-side, this review will meticulously examine every upgrade, nuance, and practical difference to help you choose the perfect smart home fitness device for your needs.
1. Unboxing & Design: Weight, wheels and simplicity
The process remains refreshingly straightforward with all models. You receive a wide range of accessories, but the real work begins after unpacking the device. I assembled all three models myself – it's not rocket science. The main differences lie in the details:
-
Weight: The original weighs 85 kg. The new 2S is slightly lighter at 82 kg. The most significant reduction is seen in the Gym Monster 2, which weighs only 78 kg – a full 7 kg less than the first generation.
-
Agility: An important, yet subtle upgrade in both new models is the transport wheels. Their width has been increased from 12 mm to 20 mm, noticeably simplifying the movement and repositioning of the device.
-
Construction: The main task is attaching the adjustable bench, which requires only four screws. The process feels virtually identical for all versions.

2. Core functionality: What can the Gym Monster do?
At its core, every Gym Monster is an intelligent, multifunctional strength training device. An electric synchronous motor with permanent magnets generates digital resistance. It is controlled via a large touchscreen, eliminating the need for physical weight plates.
-
Resistance capacity: This is a key differentiating feature. The original and the Gym Monster 2 offer a maximum weight capacity of 100 kg. The Gym Monster 2S goes up to 120 kg – a 20% increase that could be crucial for advanced users.
-
Versatility: A secure click system (improved on the 2S) allows you to attach various handles, a barbell, or a triceps rope to perform over 450 exercises from the integrated library. You can follow guided programs, create your own workouts, or use the "Free Lift" mode for complete freedom.
3. Most important upgrades in the 2 & 2S: A detailed breakdown
design & Acoustics: Quieter, cooler, better sound
-
cooling & Noise: The 2S and Gym Monster 2 feature redesigned air intakes, a more efficient motor, and an additional fan. The result is significantly quieter operation and improved heat dissipation. Speediance claims a 20% improvement in energy efficiency.
-
Audio system: The original has two 10W speakers. Models 2 and 2S feature a 2.1 sound system with a subwoofer. The difference is clearly audible – music and instructions have much more punch and clarity.
-
Floor space & Stability: When folded, the 2S has a slimmer profile than the original. A minor trade-off is that the folded 2S feels slightly less solid when deliberately shaken (although it's perfectly stable during use). The Gym Monster 2 is the most compact.
User experience: Smoother, smarter, more refined
-
Platform mechanism: The lever for releasing the training platform on the 2S/2 is now flush-mounted to prevent cable interference. The 2S features a "soft opening" mechanism – the platform lowers gently at the touch of a button, unlike the free fall of the original. Lifting it is also noticeably easier and smoother.
-
ergonomics & Height: The upper attachment point on the 2S and 2 is raised by 2 cm, a significant improvement for taller users (I'm 1.90 m tall and really appreciate this). Both new models also have a special middle setting optimized for rowing exercises.
-
mat & Screen: The platform mat has new markings for positioning. The 21.5-inch screen remains the same, but is powered by a newer chip (2 & 2S) is powered by 128 GB of storage (compared to 64 GB in Gen 1), ensuring smoother performance and future update readiness.
4. Software & Training feeling: The intelligent advantage
The software experience is extensive and a major selling point:
- &library & Directions: Access over 450 exercises with filters for muscle groups or equipment. Video tutorials feature real trainers providing audio form tips – invaluable for beginners.
-
Extended modes: The "Free Lift" mode allows settings such as eccentric overload (more weight in the lowering phase) and "Chain Mode" (resistance increases during lifting, simulating a chain).
-
Security & Tracking: Safety features can automatically reduce the weight if an imbalance or failure is detected. Each repetition is digitally recorded, creating a comprehensive training log. Pairing with a heart rate monitor integrates cardio data.
-
Training feeling: Of the three, the 2S feels the smoothest. The combination of refined mechanics, quieter operation, and higher-quality surfaces makes the training experience more integrated and premium.
